April Community Organization
The federal government has recently announced the termination of Local Food Purchase Assistance, a program that supported historically underserved farmers by distributing thousands of pounds of produce to low-income communities, schools and food pantries. The Immigrant Farmer Fund has been established in reaction to support New Roots Coopertive, Cultivating Community and Somali Bantu Community Association’s Liberation Farms. These recent cuts mean a loss of $225,000 that helped more than 50 immigrant and refugee farmers in Maine build livelihoods and food sovereignty. In addition, thousands of new immigrant families who benefited from LFPA wont have access to culturally familiar crops.
